THE BIG IDEA
Interview Test or Free Labor?
Have you ever poured days of effort into an interview test, only to end up getting…
‘‘Thank you for taking the time to take part in our interview process but unfortunately we have decided to go with another candidate…’’
Is my time a joke to you?
A developer recently shared his not-so-popular opinion on hiring practices for tech roles and I couldn’t agree more!
A few key points that stood out for me?
1. Assessing Skills vs. Free Labor: It’s one thing to assess a candidate’s skills and problem-solving abilities, but it’s another to ask them to build a full-fledged application or system from scratch. That’s not a test — that’s free labor.
2. Unreasonable Time Expectations: Most take-home tests are designed to be completed within a few hours, but many candidates end up spending much longer on them. Not every candidate has the luxury of spending hours or even days on a take-home test.
3. No compensation: If a company is asking a candidate to spend hours or even days working on a take-home test, they should be willing to compensate them for their time and effort. It’s only fair, right?
But the reality is that most companies don’t offer any compensation for take-home tests, even if the candidate ends up not getting the job.
Honestly, I think compensating candidates for test assignments needs to be normalized.
